William J. Crossin, president, St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital, hosted a press conference today to announce expansion and renovation plans for the hospital's Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU). State Representative Dave Argall also participated and presented the hospital with a $250,000 grant to assist with the project.
The investment to the ICCU is part of a larger scale expansion and renovation project to the surgical suites at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital which will take place over the next three years, Crossin explained. “The ICCU and surgical suite expansion and renovation project will bring the latest technology in patient care and surgical procedures to our community hospital,” Crossin said. He added, “This project will complement the recent improvements made to the Emergency Department, Radiology Department and patient care rooms at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital.”
Representative Argall secured the $250,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare (DPW) and the funds will be used to support the new equipment needs in the new ICCU. “Local families depend on St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital when the ones they love need immediate or specialized medical treatment,” Argall said. “This grant will ensure the doctors and nurses at the hospital have the equipment they need to perform their very important work. The funding my office secured for the hospital will help make an important part of our community even better.”
Richard C. Miller, MD, chief of surgery at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, stressed the importance of such funding. “I am proud to be a part of St. Luke's Miners as we continue to provide quality health care to the residents of our surrounding communities. The funding that Representative Argall has been able to secure assists in allowing us to bring enhanced procedures to our patients at St. Luke's along with new leading-edge technology to our community,” Dr. Miller stated.
Thomas D. Meade, MD, president and senior managing partner of Orthopaedic Associates of Allentown, recognizes the value that this funding brings to the hospital. Dr. Meade stated, “I have had the opportunity to operate in many surgical suites during my career and appreciate the investment made by St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital and Representative Argall. By providing surgeons and specialists with state-of-the-art equipment we are better prepared to provide quality care to our patients.”
Senator James J. Rhoades also was on hand to show his support for the funding Representative Argall was able to secure for the hospital's ICCU project.
Crossin concluded by stating, “Representative Argall, I continue to be impressed by your support for our community and our hospital. When a patient is in the ICCU, they need the best patient care and their families need the assurance that their loved one is receiving their treatment in the best facility. With the assistance of your grant, we will be able to provide the best patient care close to home. On behalf of my team of physicians, nurses, administration and staff along with our community residents, I thank you for your commitment and support of St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital.”
